Uncle Jack Charles’ family accept state funeral for Victorian Premier Dan Andrews

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews offered Uncle Jack Charles’ family a state funeral and the offer was accepted.

In a statement, the Prime Minister said: ‘There is no actor, no activist, no survivor and no Victorian like Uncle Jack Charles,’ Mr Andrews said in a statement.

“He leaves behind a legacy – a legacy of deep honesty, survival and reconciliation – and one that every Victorian can be proud of.”

Former Aborigine, actor and activist Uncle Jack Charles died on September 13, 2022.

Jack Charles was best known for his work in ‘The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith’ (1978) and also starred in ‘Bedevil’ (1993), ‘Blackfellas’ (1993) and more recently was the voice of the Frilled-Neck Lizard in the Netflix children’s film “Back to the Outback”.

Uncle jack’s biography “Jack Charles: Born-Again Blakfella” was published in 2020 and shortlisted for Biographical Book of the Year 2020. In 2014, Uncle Jack was the first native to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from Victoria’s Green Room Awards. He was named Victorian Senior of the Year in 2015 and he also received the Australia Arts Council’s Red Ocher Award in 2019.

Jack Charles is credited with establishing Indigenous theater in Australia. In 1971, he established the Nindethana Theater at the Pram Factory in Melbourne.

The date of the state funeral has not yet been announced.

Victoria also hosted the state funeral of Judith Durham on September 6. Olivia Newton-John’s state funeral has also been accepted by her family, but no date has yet been announced.
