Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones released an updated statement via Twitter regarding the incident. He said: “Update: Multiple victims transported to local hospitals with unknown injuries. One person is confirmed dead at the scene.
“Multiple shooters are believed to be involved and the investigation is being conducted as an active shooter situation.”
The update comes after Mr Jones initially tweeted to alert people to the incident.
He wrote: “Several people shot at MS State Fairgrounds, Mudbugs Festival. The conditions are unknown.
“At least two people have been arrested for questioning.
“The investigation is active and the scene is contained and secure.”
The sheriff reported that five people were shot.
He said: “The death was due to the shooting involving an officer. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been contacted.
“They arrived here on the scene to help and carry out the investigation.
“We are asking anyone with information about the reason for the incident, others who may be involved or have knowledge of this incident, so please contact your local officer.”
Meanwhile, five people were killed following a shooting at a Mississippi hotel on Wednesday morning, including the suspected shooter who had a two-hour standoff with local police.
Cops said at around 9 a.m. CST (1500 GMT) at a Broadway Inn Express in Biloxi, Jeremy Alesunder Reynolds, 32, shot and killed the hotel owner and two staff members, after they argued with the caretaker of the hotel.
