Indonesia is set to come up with better plastic waste management policies as the countries recently endorsed a United Nations resolution to end plastic pollution and forge a legally binding international agreement by 2024, campaigners say.
The resolution, which was endorsed by 175 UN member states at a session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) on March 2, provides for the establishment of an intergovernmental negotiating committee to draft the legally binding instrument.
The future instrument, which should tackle plastic pollution on the basis of a comprehensive approach taking into account the complete life cycle of plastic, would be “the most important international multilateral environmental agreement” since the Paris agreement on the of 2015, said the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). ) executive director Inger Andersen.
