Canoga Pop, an art walk on the sidewalks of Sherman Way in downtown Canoga Park, brought the community together Thursday night to view and buy art, listen to music and support local businesses, including small restaurants in the area.

About 130 artists of all ages and skills, as well as artisans, had exhibition facilities in designated areas between Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Canoga Avenue.

Vita White, the event’s main organizer and owner of antique shop Retro Relics, said the main entry requirement was that the artwork had to be handmade. She also said it was important for her, and for the event, to embrace a wider age group and both amateur and professional artistic skill levels.

Mary Paterson of the Canoga Park Improvement Association said organizers wanted people to move closer to the shops and restaurants on Sherman Way this year – instead of the stretch of the street being blocked off to traffic.

There were no food trucks this year, as organizers wanted visitors to frequent restaurants including Follow Your Heart, Grandi Italiani, Henri’s, Real Juicery and other eateries on the side streets of Sherman Way in the “arts district”.

The evening also included a 6 p.m. farewell/retirement party, with reservations, for businessman and community activist Michael Sirota. Sirota, was president for 30 years of Woodland Printing in Canoga Park. For the past two years he has served as President of the Canoga Park Improvement Association.

His far-reaching community involvement included serving on the Canoga Park Neighborhood Council, serving as a member of the Main Street Canoga Park Board of Directors, former President of the LAPD West Valley Jeopardy Foundation (a gang diversion program), board or committee member. for the Guadalupe Center, as well as participation in the Lions Club, Canoga Park Memorial Day Parade, Los Angeles Free Clinic, Evening Optimist Club and other organizations.

The art walk was sponsored by the Canoga Park Improvement Association (the non-profit organization that operates Canoga Park’s Historic Old Town Business Improvement District), Retro Relics, Canoga Park Art WalkThird Thursday at Canoga Park, Farmers Insurance Tamara Heinig, the Real Juicery and J and P Autobody Repair LLC.
