Are squirt guns a good idea in New York State?

The summer of 2022 is almost officially here and given recent events and mass shootings across the country and here in New York State, gun violence is on everyone’s mind. But how far does the idea of trying to make a difference go?

My wife and I are raising three boys who are all under 7 years old. Like most kids their age, they look forward to getting their hands on squirt guns every summer. But this summer, it has a different feeling when I see them blowing water back and forth. I wonder if I’m being overly cautious or protective? But regardless, I try to teach our sons, whenever I can, the importance of understanding and respecting firearms. Kids all over the country love water guns and we grew up with them too and for the most part they are an innocent way to have fun. But if the opportunity arises, maybe it’s a good opportunity to talk about firearms with your children?

Here in New York Statethere are some regulations regarding the sale of toys/fake guns or what is allowed in public places. A CHECKLIST is available which spells out what is accepted or not in New York.

Some may choose water balloons to cool off? Dave Fields of our sister station, 96.1 The Breeze, also spoke about it. And while the laws won’t stop you from tossing a few water balloons around the garden this summer,

…The (NYS) law calls for a ban on releasing balloons, you could say that when you throw a water balloon, it’s like releasing a balloon that’s floating in the sky…but according to the mood of the policeman, you could be fined for launching water balloons this summer.

Have a great summer and stay safe!!
