Amazon is the best American company to work for to advance in your career

LinkedIn on Wednesday named Amazon the best US company to work for if you’re looking for career growth. This is the second year that Amazon has topped the list.

LinkedIn’s Top Companies 2022 list follows seven pillars focused on career progression: Ability to Advance, Skills Development, Company Stability, External Opportunity, Company Affinity, Gender Diversity, and Education Diversity. The company said the ranking is based on data from its 810 million members and the investments companies make in their employees.

But JUST Capital, a partner at CNBC, a platform dedicated to measuring and improving business performance, found that the e-commerce giant ranks much lower among workers.

JUST ranks Amazon 11th out of 53 in retail and 569th overall among companies JUST tracks in the Russell 1000. JUST Capital’s ranking is determined by a poll of Americans on the issues they believe should be the priority for American companies. For workers, these include paying a living wage, worker health and safety, benefits and work-life balance, diversity, equity and inclusion, and investment and training of manpower.

Amazon exceeds the industry average in JUST’s rankings in all but one category: worker health and safety, which measures the company’s welfare protections for workers beyond what is required by the law.

JUST also ranks Amazon below the industry average for health and safety based on the number of controversies and fewer relevant policies in the company.

This category is notably absent from the rating that goes into LinkedIn’s listing.

Amazon, the nation’s second largest private employer, has come under scrutiny from lawmakers, activists and some of its own employees over its labor record.

Warehouse and delivery workers have regularly spoken out against the company, arguing that its “customer obsession” and emphasis on fast delivery has created an unsafe work environment. They claimed the hectic pace did not allow for adequate breaks and toilet time, and employees also urged the company to raise wages and provide more paid time off.

Activism among employees has picked up since the start of the coronavirus pandemic – with organized protests and calls for workplace safety. Employees also accused Amazon of retaliating against white-collar and blue-collar workers who publicly criticized the company.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy acknowledged at the GeekWire summit in October that the company could do more to treat employees better. “I think if you have a large group of people like us – we have 1.2 million employees – it’s almost like a small country,” he said. “There are a lot of things you could do better.”

Amazon workers from Staten Island to New York have voted to join a union in perhaps the strongest signal of activism within the company. The result represents a major shake-up for the e-commerce giant, which has stood firmly against unions since its founding more than two decades ago.

The union election focused on how Amazon treats its employees. Earlier this month, the House Oversight Committee launched an investigation into Amazon’s labor practices, demanding that it turn over information about a deadly warehouse collapse in Illinois on Thursday. last year.

Amid growing labor unrest, Amazon pledged last year to work to improve employee wellbeing. The company has added “Strive to be the best employer on Earth” to its list of leadership principles, which serve as the foundation of its corporate culture.

The company has also added stronger benefits, such as tuition coverage, including books and fees, for its approximately 750,000 hourly employees nationwide. It pledged $1.2 billion to help upgrade the skills of more than 300,000 of its employees by 2025.

Last fall, Amazon raised its average starting wage for U.S. warehouse workers to $18 an hour, after setting a minimum wage of $15 an hour in 2018.
